150th Celebration:
St. Francis, Moab
Seventy people gathered in Moab and enjoyed food, laughter, fellowship and stories at the the first of the regional celebrations of the 150th year of the Episcopal Church in Utah.
They enjoyed stories from members of the congregation and the Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi. Bishop Hayashi also dedicated the new labyrinth at St. Francis with reflection and prayer. The regional celebrations coincide with locations where the Bishop is visiting and continue over the next few months. The celebration continued on Sunday with the Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi celebrating the Eucharist and preaching.

150th Regional Celebration:
Ogden Youth Impact Facility
The northern area of the diocese hosted the second regional celebration of the 150th year of the Episcopal Church in Utah. They selected the successful Youth Impact facility in Ogden as the venue. The September 30th evening featured food, music, fun and raising money for ministry. As in all regional celebrations, Bishop Scott B. Hayashi welcomed the guests to reflect on the work of the church over the last century and a half. Youth Impact is one of those community ministries that features the outreach of the church as a concept inspired by Bishop Daniel S. Tuttle in 1867. The program is a safe place for hundreds of at-risk youth in the Ogden area.
The youth come from all over the area to work together on projects, do their homework, eat dinner and do their own service programs. It started in the basement of Good Shepherd Church and has become a community standard under director Robb Hall.

150th Regional Celebration:
Kanab
Congregations from Utah's southwest and Page, Arizona gathered in a bit of the "Old West." for a cookout style dinner, a tour of a western movie set, and to film a movie. The October 28th event took place at the Little Hollywood complex in Kanab. The assembled group celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Episcopal Church in Utah with some movie acting on the old Hollywood set. The Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi played the part of the bad guy who was chased out of town by the good guy, played by The Rev. Lee Montgomery. However, the plot became a little confused before we knew what really happened in the film. We thank Amy O'Donnell for the picture of the Bishop posing on the set.
150th Regional Celebration:
Salt Lake
On Saturday November 18th, 2017, St. James Church, 7486 Union Park Ave, Midvale, hosted the fifth and final 150th Anniversary celebration of the Episcopal Church in Utah. The event marked the culmination of the 'anniversary year'. The Rev. Terri Heyduk observed that "the celebration helped to strengthen relationships among the congregations in the 'central' region and provided a forum for discussing a future vision for the ongoing legacy of the Episcopal Church in Utah".
Diocesan Golf Outing
On September 16, 2017, the Episcopal Diocese of Utah held a scramble-style golf outing as partof the 150 year celebration.
The event was held at Mountain Dell Golf Course outside Salt Lake City on an unusually cold fall morning. It was designed to promote fellowship among the congregations in this 150th year.

July 2nd Birthday Celebrations
It was 150 years ago on July 2, 1867, that Bishop Daniel S. Tuttle climbed out of a stage, stood on the corner of First South and Second East in Salt Lake City and started his ministry. Coincidentally, the eleventh bishop of the diocese, The Rt. Rev. Scott B. Hayashi has his office on First South and Second East and also looks forward to our continued ministry.
To commemorate the ministry of The Episcopal Church in Utah and Northern Arizona, congregations hosted birthday parties on July 2nd, 2017 using 150th Anniversary swag provided by the 150th Celebration Committee.
The celebrations were an overwhelming success. It was a wonderful thing to see all come together in the spirit of our past and continued ministry in our future. We are grateful to all who worked hard to make these gatherings a reality.

Pride Parade 2017
On Pentecost Sunday, Bishop Scott B. Hayashi led congregations from The Episcopal Diocese of Utah. They joined in support of the LGBTQ community by marching in the annual Pride Parade. It was a great way to continue the celebration of 150 years of social justice ministry in Utah. The diocese was the largest ecclesiastical group to participate in the parade and all received a warm welcome from other marchers as well as observers. Thank you to all who marched, rode, watched and prayed for us. The diocese is already looking forward to next year. |
Souper Bowl of Caring“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game,
help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat” The Souper Bowl of Caring was the Diocesan-wide kick-off event for the 150th Anniversary of the Episcopal Diocese in Utah. It was hosted from January 29th until February 5th 2017. Almost all congregations held a fundraising event, with the promise of the diocesan match: all monetary contributions were to be matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis, and $0.25 matched per item of food donated. The match applied up to a cap of $15,000. Thanks to a lot of hard work, the Souper Bowl of Caring was a great success. Congregations within the diocese raised a total of $22,265.39. Bishop Scott B. Hayashi generously offered to donate $7,265.39 to cover the amount over the 15,000 cap, so that all funds raised by congregations were matched dollar for dollar. To see a full list of funds raised by each congregation, please see the spreadsheet below. |
